As ever, EURSOC's report on relations between the EU and China drew plenty of comments from readers.
Here's reader A.V. on how US arms sales to Pakistan differ from proposed EU sales to China:
"I would like to add that there is one more key difference between EU sales to China and US sales to Pakistan:
EU sales to China are motivated by financial gain as much as trying to bring about a superpower capable of balancing the United States. While the US will most likely see a profit from its sales to Pakistan, I believe the the main motivation is to pay-off Pakistan for their cooperation in the fight against the Taliban and internal Islamic extremists. Now whether the EU recognizes it or not, the whole world derived benefit from the elimination of the Taliban and the disruption of Al-Qaida operations. France and Germany might argue that a multi-polar world is better, but a China with modernized weaponry is dangerous, definitely in the short-term as it relates to Taiwan and other near neighbors, if not necessarily to the US, since the US may turn its back on its guarantee.
"As you stated in the article, the Pakistan-Indian situation is touchy as well, and the US does not want to anger India unnecessarily, as was apparent form Rumsfeld's recent trip.
"Unfortunately, I see the arms sales as a necessary evil.
"Lets just hope that Musharaf keeps dodging those assassination attempts, or that those F14s on sale to Pakistan come with remote destruct capability."
