France Threatens Taiwan Elections
Well, we've heard it all now. France is joining China in naval training exercises in a clear threat to influence Taiwan's elections three days from now.
France did everything in its power to prevent the people of Iraq enjoying freedom and democracy. Now it seems set to consign Taiwan's democrats to the same threat. Reuters reports that two French warships will join Chinese vessels off China's eastern coast, nearly 800 miles from Taiwan. Chinese officials describe the exercise as the biggest ever between China and a foreign power.
On Thursday, Taiwan's voters are faced with a presidential election and a referendum. China has made it clear that it views any vote towards independence as a provocation. While other western nations have moved away from outright support of Taiwanese freedom, France's role in assisting China's threats to the small nation is a shameful first.
