The Hurricane Moment
Here's another reason why journalists - financial and otherwise - have been falling over one another to predict the catastrophic demise of the western economies.
No-one wants to have missed their "Hurricane Moment."
Back in October 1987, BBC weatherman Michael Fish was delivering his usual evening forecast. "Earlier on today apparently a lady rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane on the way", he told viewers, "Well don't worry if you're watching, there isn't."
The following night, Britain's worst storm for nearly 300 years struck the south of the country, causing untold damage and leaving chaos in its wake. The BBC hadn't even warned viewers of high winds.
Following the storm, Fish became a byword for missing an obvious disaster as it approaches. Journalists have swiftly changed course from predicting the best, to predicting the very worst. No-one wants to look like a simple optimist. Being pack animals at heart, few will break the consensus.
