They can be a bit slow on the uptake in the mainstream media. Vanity Fair's summer edition features Carla Bruni as its cover star: France's first lady is draped beguilingly over an armchair in the grand Elysée Palace. The headline? "The New Jackie O?"

Well, if the writers had been reading EURSOC in January, they might have come across our story titled The Next Jackie O?

Back then, the media didn't know what to make of Nicolas Sarkozy's liaison with La Bruni. The half of the press that wasn't laughing at the recently divorced French President's posturing was grumbling that the model-turned-singer, who has enjoyed a colourful personal life, was an unsuitable consort for one of the world's most powerful leaders.

EURSOC was the lone voice praising Mme Bruni, and enthusing about her potential as a first lady.

Well, we hate to say we told you so. In the seven months since we published, Carla's breeding and style have won her over to all but the most recalcitrant French observers. Her popularity ranks higher than her husband's; invitations from foreign governments have arrived in Paris thick and fast, and the first question the host nation's press asks is "Is Carla coming?"

Here's the long Vanity Fair interview & profile, if you'd like some summer reading.

We'll be back in a couple of weeks.
