It has become scary in England at night and even in daylight hours.

The most recent figures available say that England and Wales are above all European countries in terms of ‘reported crime’; meaning ‘attacks or threats per 100 population’. Only the United States, Canada and Finland beat England and Wales in the league of ‘Homicides per 100,000 population’.

The sources for this information are the United Nations, the International Crime Victims Survey (ICVS) and the US Department of Justice.

The evolution of Britain as a (relatively) low-murder but high-violece society is most evident on Saturday nights when many – filled with alcohol – go on the rampage.

A lot of incidents are un-recorded by the ICVS because their calculations do not include persons under the age of sixteen. Also, their statistics (or sadistics) do not include attacks or threats in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Unofficially, hospital staff say their wards are now over-loaded with victims of knife-stabbing and injuries from pistols.

The chief of London’s Metropolitan Police, otherwise known as Scotland Yard, has just announced that knife-crime has become the priority, ahead even of terrorism.

A straw-poll by British newspaper and television reporters indicates that many citizens view the answer as ‘putting more bobbies on the beat’. Especially on a Saturday night.

A ‘Bowie Knife’ is a one-edged knife, with a blade about 12-inches long. Invented in the 19th century.

When you leave the King’s Arms in Wolverhampton on the weekend, take one with you.

Just in case.
