EURSOC has been banging the drum for the fragrant Carla Bruni since before Christmas, so it's with some satisfaction that we note the mainstream media continues to catch up. The Daily Telegraph gives a track-by-track review of her new album - we don't think Bob Dylan, U2 or Michael Jackson have ever been afforded this tribute. As well as traditional reviews, the Guardian publishes a lengthy blog on the subject matter of the CD, again on a track-by-track basis. The media circus in France which has accompanied the release of Comme Si De Rien N'Etait is also noted.

Prior to her marriage to Sarkozy, Bruni was much admired on the artistic left for her breathy, confessional music and commitment to approved causes. Since she hooked up with the leading hate figure for her genre, readers and commentators on leftist newspapers have lined up to criticise her. Her record label supposedly considered putting a sticker on the case of her CD advising that listeners could like Carla while hating her husband. However, she remains fascinating: Left-wing daily Libération reported sales soared 40 percent when it featured a long interview with Bruni.

Does her husband, Nicolas Sarkozy feature on the new CD? Supposedly no, because most of the tracks were written and recorded before she met the French President. However, reviewers in the British and French media have scoured Carla's lyrics for anything that might refer to Sarko: A lyric comparing a lover to cocaine lends an aura of danger to her husband, while in another she croons of her "thirty lovers", doubtless assuring the diminutive but energetic Sarkozy that comparisons are odious.

You can listen to the album on Carla Bruni's website (though try Firefox, we can't get it to work with Safari).
