The First Church?
Archaeologists in Jordan have uncovered what they claim could be the first Christian church, dating from the first decades after Christ's death.
A circular area was found in a cave beneath St. Georgeous church, which was built in 230 A.D; it had, the archaeologists say, a seating area and tunnels leading to water supplies. The Jordanians say that there is evidence of early worship in the circular area. They believe early Christians including 'the 70 beloved by God and the divine' took refuge from persecution in Jerusalem across the Jordan. Carvings on the later church refer to the 70 beloved, who went on to found the Christian church.
Other archaeologists have disputed the claims, demanding "extraordinary evidence" for their statements - the earliest churches yet discovered date from the 3rd century.
