Get Your Priorities Right
Australian couldn't give a XXXX for child's safety
An Aussie driver has been fined for putting a seatbelt around a case of beer instead of his five year old passenger.
A police officer stopped a car driving into the outback town of Alice Springs to find that the four adults in it had strapped a case of beer into the middle of the back seat, making a child sit on the floor below.
The policeman said he was "shocked and appalled" by the attitude of the driver and adult passengers, who he said were "unconcerned for the child's safety."
"I haven't ever seen something like this before," he told local reporters. "Sure, we get beer out of vehicles that is being taken into restricted areas but this is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child."
The Guardian reports that the Australian government has banned alcohol in some Aboriginal communities "as part of an attempt to stamp out child abuse."
The driver was fined $750 (£365) for carrying an unrestrained child and driving an unregistered and unlicensed car.
