Wounded, But Soldiering On (For Now)

Things are looking bleak for Hillary Clinton, reports EURSOC's US correspondent Chris Timmers.

With the results of the primary voting on 7 May, where Hillary Clinton won a razor thin margin of votes in Indiana and was decisively trounced by Barak Obama in North Carolina, her chances of winning the Democratic nomination for president look bleaker than ever.

Her campaign reminds me of those World War II movies in which an American B-17 bomber, returning from a mission over Germany, tries to return to base. Two of its four engines are trailing smoke, its pilot wounded, navigator dead, low on fuel, and losing altitude, it lumbers on, sputtering over the horizon to a fate the viewers know. If only it can maintain altitude, it has a chance. But we know that won't happen.

The Clinton campaign did not close the "delegate gap" last Tuesday and actually lost ground. Adding insult to injury, George McGovern, the unsuccessful Democratic Presidential nominee who lost massively to Richard Nixon in 1972 and who initially endorsed Mrs Clinton, called on her, yesterday, to quit the race. Further, he is now endorsing Barak Obama. And now the Associated Press tells us that, to date, Mrs Clinton has loaned her campaign $11.4 million dollars and is having trouble raising money while Obama keeps reeling in the bucks.

Both Clintons are obsessed with the acquisition and use of power, so don't count Hillary out yet. But with every passing day, the mountain she needs to climb in order to claim the nomination for her party gets steeper and longer.

But who knows what will happen. The Clintons are crafty and may resort to any number of technicalities to get Hillary the nod. Stay tuned for more details!

Editor's note: Chris posted this report the evening of the Indiana vote, and unfortunately we were unable to publish before today. While speculation has increased that the Clinton campaign is about to come grinding to a halt, there has been no substantial change in the status Chris reports above, so we have posted it anyway. Apologies to Chris and to our US readers for the delay.
