Could it be that the Hamas-backed creators of Palestinian children's television are fans of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who?

The Doctor, played by David Tennant, returned to our screens on Saturday. In his absence, however, the Palestinian al-Aqsa channel dubbed "terror TV" has aired characters uncannily similar to two from the series long history.

In a 1960s episode, the Menoptra were good-natured bee/mothlike creatures; last year, Nahoul the Hamas bee made his debut on al-Aqsa. Nahoul too seemed gentle on first appearances, but soon revealed himself to be a fanatical would-bee martyr.

Later incarnations of the Doctor were terrorised by the sinister Autons: Innocent-looking shop dummies who came to life to slaughter their victims. Last month, a Hamas puppet show introduced "George Bush", an evil tailor's dummy who is killed by a Palestinian child.

EURSOC looks forward to the Daleks making an appearance.
