Cheaper Than A Press Officer
Thanks to Gawain of England Expects for pointing us in the direction of the European Parliament's Prize for Journalism.
Due to be awarded for the first time in October, the four prizes of €5000 each will be awarded to hacks "dealing with major issues at European level or to promoting a better understanding of the institutions or policies of the European Union."
The rules state that the competition is only open to reporters who have not already received funding through EU institutions, so one imagines that rules plenty of them out, at least those who work for publications or broadcasters who are part or wholly funded by the EU. Wonder if advertisements from European Parliament political groupings, such as the EPP-ED and Socialist Bloc banners which appear on Europe's World count as funding from EU institutions?
Prizes are awarded in the fields of print, television, radio and internet. Unfortunately, there's a catch: The jury comes under the aegis of the European Parliament information offices and is made up of three European Parliament members, six journalists (all chosen by the EU Parliament).
As England Expects notes, don't expect anyone who broke a parliamentary expenses scandal to get far along the shortlist.
