As well as unleavened Matso bread there will be something else on the menu for the traditional week-long Jewish spring religious festival of Passover. (This year it arrives at nightfall on 19 April).

The new ingredient is Viagra, an American drug designed to aid against impotency.

A leading Israeli rabbi has ruled that Jewish men may consume Viagra in the period of Passover. But there is a caveat. Rabbi Mordechai Eliahu says the blue pill call be swallowed only if it is encased in a special soluble kosher capsule.

(The pill must also be blessed by a certified rabbi before use).

A prescription for Viagra, and its equivalents such as Cialis, is issued once every minute in Israel according to research by the respected newspaper, the Jerusalem Post.

Since Viagra was introduced seven years ago, more than 23 million men have been prescribed the drug worldwide. This is a statistic from the inventor Pfizer Parcamceuticals Inc. Pfizer says sales are worth nearly $2 billion per year.

Happy Passover.
