Eastern Europe 1950s... Britain 2008

Now here's one even Orwell didn't dream up for 1984: Authorities are investing in cameras designed to sniff out blood in order to ensure drivers are not abusing "car-sharing" lanes by driving alone.

The cameras estimate how many passengers each car contains by detecting the amount of body fluid in the vehicle.

The Daily Mail reports:

"The cameras work by sending an infrared beam through the windscreen of vehicles which detects the unique make-up of blood and water content in human skin."

Ah, so our plan to drive everywhere with 8 litres of water in the boot won't work, then.

"The system's inventors believe it will catch out motorists who try to fool existing CCTV road cameras by placing mannequins in passenger seats or fixing photographs to windscreens."

Really? How many people drive around with mannequins in their car seats? What sort of fantasy world are these people living in?

So the police forces are spending millions on blood-hunting technology to catch the few who abuse "car-sharing" lanes - or is this scheme, like so many others, part of a broader drive to consolidate Britain as the world's leading surveillance society?
