The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi died on 5 February at the age of 91. Perhaps he is now in his heavenly transcendental Om sweet Om.

The Beatles, who stayed at his 'ashram' (defined as a retreat for a holy man who has renounced the world) in the foothills of the Himalayas in the late 1960s, once sung a song, 'Baby You're a Rich Man'.

How appropriate. What is not generally recognised is that the guru was also a tycoon. His property empire was valued at over $10 billion ten years ago. He died in seclusion having amassed a meagre personal fortune estimated at $2 billion.

The Maharishi (great seer) studied math and physics at Allahbad University. His higher education served him well throughout his long life.

He said it helped him invent "yogic flying" and his trade mark "transcendental meditation".

His most harsh critic was John Lennon. Before leaving the ashram Lennon told him: "We're leaving - Why ? - Well if you're so cosmic you'll know why".

Later Lennon went on to denounce Mr Yogi with the satirical song 'Sexy Sadie' recorded for The Beatles' 'white album'. Lyrics: "Sexy Sadie, look at what you've done. You made a fool of everyone ... You'll get yours yet, however big you think you are".

The last word must go to Ringo Starr. Upon arriving from India he was interviewed at London's Heathrow airport.

He quipped: "It was like Butlin's but the food wasn't as good".
