Meanwhile, Sarkozy announced during a press conference this morning that his romance with the ex-model is "serious." He deflected questions about a rumoured marriage, telling hacks "There is a strong chance that you will learn about it once it's already been done" - which, worryingly, would suggest to your correspondent that Sarkozy is planning a Vegas wedding. It's impossible to arrange a secret wedding in France.
Sarkozy said that he did not seek media attention for his romance, but claimed that by conducting his personal affairs openly he hoped to break the "hateful tradition of hypocrisy" in French public life. Observers claim this is a reference to former President François Mitterand, who secretly had a daughter with one of his mistresses. Sarkozy's predecessor in the Elysée, Jacques Chirac, was also rumoured to be something of a ladies man, despite his long marriage to Bernadette.
