Love's Cooking In The Kitchen
Shock, horror. According to a recent IsoPublic survey and a report from Mintel, a British market-research company, men in the United Kingdom are spending much more time in the kitchen than we thought possible.
British women are still on top, with a ratio of 77 per cent per household at the stove. But men are catching up. Perhaps thanks to the television prominence of celebrity chefs, it is difficult to avoid men who have an opinion on everything from lemongrass to how best to prepare a dinner for four.
The real measure is that manufacturers have recognised this trend and have responded with "masculine" kitchens.
Poggenpohl, a firm with roots in Switzerland, will soon introduce a new model ready-made cookery salon especially for men. It will be in aluminium, dark gloss and glass. A "sleek and functional designlanguage (for) ... male customers". (This is what the brochure says).
It comes complete with an in-built high-tech audio-visual apparatus. There is also an oven. (The only thing they forgot was a mini-bar).
AEG-Electrolux, an international household appliance group, now sells a fridge with an internet screen above the door.
Nonetheless, the way to a man's heart will remain by way of his stomach. Ergo, women will always win in the end.
The proof is in the pudding.
