Public Safety & The Human Rights Act
Here's a comment From a EURSOC reader "Know your Rights" originally posted following our report on Italy's expulsion of Romanian immigrants.
"Many EU countries routinely chuck out foreigners, like France who are currently deporting en masse.
"Britain's rulers like to hide behind the EU on this issue and to pretend that the European Convention of Human Rights prohibits the expulsion of terrorists and other criminals when this is clearly not the case."
ARTICLE 15
"In time of war or other public emergency threatening the life of the nation any High Contracting Party may take measures derogating from its obligations under this Convention to the extent strictly required by the exigencies of the situation, provided that such measures are not inconsistent with its other obligations under international law."
"The terrorist attacks in Britain, the thousands of potential terrorists identified by the security forces, the thousands of fundementalists and extremists running around free and the fact that Britain has some ten thousand front line troops in Iraq and Afganistan should, you would think, justify a 'public emergency'. Not enough it would seem for the New Labour government who see nothing strange about the dual policy of being a leading player in fighting the 'war on terror' in the Middle-East while importing as many people as possible from active terrorist countries.
"The opposition and the press seem never to have bothered to read the human rights act. Britain doesn't seem to have as much clout in the EU as the Italians, who have been given the nod to break their own laws.
"It's great to be at the 'heart of Europe'."
