Rugby & Football
You know you're getting old when you read an article by Richard Littlejohn and agree with every word of it. Two EURSOC correspondents had an extended conversation yesterday about the relative merits of the England football and rugby teams. Their conclusions weren't far off what Littlejohn writes in today's Daily Mail.
An extract below: The full article is here.
"English rugby represents all that is best about Britain. At the risk of coming over all Johnny Major, it embodies fair play, honour, country pubs, wet labradors, the Regiment, community in the true sense of the word and the spirit which won two world wars.
"Football fans may sing about "Two world wars and one world cup" but it's a sham. The modern game represents everything that's tacky, tawdry, moneygrubbing, Saturday-Night's-Alright-For-Fighting about our country.
"It's the difference between England and In-ger-lund. And I know which I prefer."
