The web edition of a French newspaper claims that Nicolas and Cécilia Sarkozy appeared before a judge on Monday afternoon to put into motion their separation and eventual divorce.

Le Nouvel Observateur ran with the story, which has inflamed the French media for the past week.

It adds that the President's spokesman David Martinon continues to say he has "no further comment" to make on the rumours. The newspaper's latest edition, due on Thursday, has France's first couple looking suitable strained on its cover. Describing this month as Sarkozy's "Black October", it links the end of his marriage with a massive transport strike planned by trade unions for tomorrow; France's defeat by England in the Rugby World Cup at the weekend (the President had attached himself to the fortunes of the French team); and a row over proposed DNA testing for the families of immigrants, planned to combat fraudulent residency claims.

An official announcement is expected shortly.
