African Leaders Cheer Mugabe

Depressing news for anyone who thought that Robert Mugabe's fellow African leaders are the key to pressuring the old man to change his ways. On arrival in Lusaka, Zambia for a conference of Southern African leaders, Mugabe was welcomed with cheers and applause from his peers and their circle.

The Times reports that no other leader received such a greeting.

Obviously Mugabe's management of his country - the world's lowest life expectancy, highest unemployment and inflation rates - is thought a triumph by the African elite.

Meanwhile, Britain's Ministry of Defence has reportedly drawn up plans to evacuate up to 22,000 British nationals who for reasons best known to themselves have chosen to remain in Mugabe's Zimbabwe. While sources stress that there are no plans to send in troops, it is claimed that Zimbabwe's Brits will be advised to take routes into South Africa and head for a former military base there should Zimbabwe's slide into chaos continue.
