Had it *up to here* with coverage of Paris Hilton? Pity poor Mika Brzezinski, a presenter on MSNBC's Morning Joe news programme. Mika has become a heroine for real news junkies across the US for refusing to read a report of Ms Hilton's release from prison as the day's top story. Here's the video.

Ms Brzezinski first apologises to viewers for the nature of the lead story - which came as a senior Republican attacked President Bush over his Iraq policy - and then tries to set fire to the script.

She then lead with the news from the Senate, but not before her co-presenter had run footage of the society princess' release from prison.

The Paris Hilton story dominated US news channels last week, leaving some viewers puzzled as to why the celebrity - who is noted for little more than attending parties and starring in a pornographic video shot by her then boyfriend - should receive so much attention. It's not as if nothing else is happening in the world or anything.

But as is the nature with Big Media, what one broadcaster deemed a crucial story had to be followed up by rivals.
