On His Way Out

EURSOC's US correspondent Chris Timmers has bad news for John McCain.

Further confirmation that the US Senator from Arizona is pretty much finished: in a letter to contributors earlier this month, John McCain pleaded, "I urgently need your help before June 30." Why the end of June? Because in the week immediately following, candidates must file their quarterly campaign finance reports, as required by US law. Voters and pundits alike will see that McCain's contributions have continued to plummet. It's a vicous, downward spiral: the less money you take in, the less people give. The less you have, the fewer radio spots, TV ads, mailings, etc. you can afford. Which means you take in fewer dollars. Which means...your goose is eventually cooked.

Hey John, do yourself and all of us a favor: bow out...NOW!

From the Pew Research Center comes a very interesting poll researching voter attitudes here in the US. In a sampling of 1503 eligible voters from 30 May - 3 Jun 2007, the question was asked: "How much thought have you given to candidates who may be running for President in 2008?" Perhaps the answers won't surprise, but here they are:

A lot: 29%

Some: 34%

Not much: 20%

None: 16%

Don't know: 1%

TOTAL: 100%

(Source: www.PewResearch.org)

Well, well. The first primaries are 7+ months away and 71% of Americans have given "some" or less thought to the man or woman who might be their next chief executive.

And we gave up monarchy for this?

More Pew Research numbers quickly: what is very important to Americans? Candidates for President want to know, of course. Of 1247 registered voters contacted during the same time frame (above), here is the priority listing with respondent percentages attached:

Very Important issues

The economy: 74%

Iraq: 73%

Health care: 72%

Terrorism: 69%

Dead last out of nine categories was Abortion (40%), preceded by Immigration (54%), Environment (55%), Energy (61%), and Taxes (62%).

Read these words, oh candidates, and learn.

Until next time....
