Norwegian Wood
Norway is exporting its old folks to Spain.
Their destination is quite often the Costa Blanca. And to make matters better, the trip is subsidised by the tax payers in the kingdom of Norway.
The government in the capital, Oslo, is oil-rich, so it does not matter much to the ordinary man or woman on the streets of Bergen if the elderly and infirm are transported to Alicante.
So, north meets south. "Instead of building a new treatment centre in Oslo, local authorities can just build one in southern Spain," says Lotte Tollefsen, a spokeswoman at the Norwegian embassay in Madrid. She adds: "It is easy to find qualified medical personnel and the climate is very beneficial to the patients."
All the OAPs have to do is get the approval of their doctors, fill in a few forms, and they are eligible for six weeks to a lifetime stay near Benidorm.
The flood of Norwegian newcomers to the south of Spain has prompted the government of Oslo to open its own social security office in Alicante.
For doctors and nurses from Stavanger is is also beneficial to work for a year or two in a pleasant climate.
Isn't good, Norwegian (old) wood.
