No More Sacred Cows

Authorities in Delhi, the capital of India, have a plan to rid the city of the cows that wander through the streets. The idea is to take the sacred animals to a new dairy complex. The installation may open in August 2008.

Cows are revered by India's Hindu majority. And many in the nation are reported to be profoundly upset by the proposal from Delhi.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi explains their move - which must be approved in a judgement from the High Court - by saying that the cattle block automobile traffic in the city's congested streets.

It is estimated that 28,000 cattle are meandering around downtown Delhi, feeding on rubbish and napping in the middle of roads.

Mahatma Gandhi said: "The most important outward manifestation of Hinduism (is) the idea of cow protection."

Lord Krishna, the Hindu deity, is known by the name Govinda: "One who brings satisfaction to the cows."

So, cows or no cows, remember, Krishna is watching you.
