Latest News: François Bayrou has refused to back either candidate for the May 6 final round poll.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, the former centrist candidate said that he accept "neither tenders or rallying cries" from either Nicholas Sarkozy or Ségolène Royal's camps.

He announced the formation of a new political party, the Democratic Party.

Many pundits expected Bayrou to refuse the choice of backing either Sarkozy or Royal. Nevertheless, this didn't prevent either camp from wooing the UDF leader.

Royal in particularly will be disappointed by Bayrou's refusal to back her campaign. She is believed to have offered him and his party the possibility of ministerial postings in exchange for an endorsement.

Instead, Bayrou's 7 million voters will have to make up their own minds the Sunday after next: Which is what Bayrou privately reckoned they would do with or without his support.

More as we get it.
