The Peace Of The Wasteland
China has warned against new sanctions against Sudan, following reports that the Sudanese government is flying arms and heavy military equipment to the Darfur region in violation of a UN Security Council resolution.
China, Russia and South Africa oppose new sanctions (South Africa refusing to criticise monstrous acts by another African government? Never!). They claim that Sudan's agreement for the deployment of 2500 UN Blue Helmets should be seen as a positive step, despite the evidence presented which suggests that the government is stepping up its support for the militias who have killed 200,000 and displaced 2,500,000 in the past two years.
"It's not a proper time to discuss sanctions," said China's foreign ministry spokesman.
And when would be a "proper time?" When Sudan's government-backed militias have finished the job wiped out all opposition in the region? Why is China advocating the peace of the wasteland?
Oh - here's the IHT:
"China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, buys two-thirds of Sudan's oil exports and sells the African country weapons and military aircraft."
