Madrid victim told off for t-shirt

A victim of the 11 March terror attacks in Madrid caused a stir in a courtroom yesterday by wearing a t-shirt decorated with one of the cartoons of Mohammed that have inflamed many Muslims.

The woman wore the t-shirt as the trial of 29 terror suspects accused of being linked to the bombings took place.

UPDATED & CORRECTION: See below.

The judge said that while her t-shirt was not illegal under Spain's free speech laws, he believed her attitude was "out of place" for a court.

From Reuters we hear that the woman's t-shirt depicted Mohammed with a bomb in his turban - perhaps the most famous of the Jyllands-Posten images.

She is reported to have walked up to the glass screen holding the suspects with her t-shirt on display, stayed long enough for the suspects to see it, and walked out of the courtroom.

CORRECTION: The woman's husband is believed to have died in the attacks; she herself was not injured in the terrorist bombings, as we reported earlier.

She has not been identified, but is thought to be a member of Spain's Association of citizens Affected by Terrorism.
