Keep It In The (Royal) Family

We all knew that France's Socialist presidential hopeful Ségolène Royal came from a "traditional, Catholic" family - it's just we didn't realise quite how traditional. Her cousin, Anne-Christine Royal is also running for office, though for the rather more modest position of municipal councillor in Bordeaux. However, she's no Socialist: Anne-Christine is on the lists of the far-right National Front.

A 41 year-old mother of ten, Anne-Christine shares her cousin's good looks but emphatically not her political affiliation. She's been campaigning for election for Jean-Marie Le Pen's extremist outfit since 2001, when she was second on the party lists for her region.

Royal's family is fascinating. Her father Jacques Royal was a Colonel and was said to sympathise with the extreme-right. Her brother Gérard Royal was a member of the French special forces team which sank Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in 1986. Another brother worked for Jacques Chirac's RPR party.

How interesting family gatherings chez Les Royals must be.

Wonder which one is the black sheep?
