Gruesome Twosome
Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schröder's mutual affection for one another has worried rival leaders - and turned stomachs - across Europe since Spring.
Now the gruesome twosome have cemented their bond still further. German chancellor Schröder has asked French president Chirac to represent him at Friday's European summit. Schröder will be attending to domestic duties in Berlin, while Chirac will handle any business relating to Germany.
According to the BBC, pundits see this "breathtaking" move as progress towards an eventual merging France and Germany.
