Now there's a way for the Mainstream Media to fight back in the battle for ratings. On Saturday night, viewers of a Swedish state television news bulletin were surprised to see a porn movie broadcast behind the presenter. An accident, the broadcaster says - but was it?
Anchorman Peter Dahlgren was delivering his usual evening spiel for SVT news, a bank of monitors displaying news "as it happens" flashing behind him. Except that instead of the usual scenes from other news channels, one of the screens was showing a Czech porn movie.
Viewers didn't complain - even when one production lackey realised the mistake and ran out to switch off the offending monitor.
Their excuse? The production team had been watching a sports show on France's Canal Plus, and had neglected to change channel, forgetting that Canal Plus often shows adult movies after midnight. With the channel left tuned into Canal Plus, it was inevitable that porn would come "accidentally" into the picture.
Or was it? EURSOC has Canal Plus too, and like all French channels following a child protection law introduced a few years ago, you have to enter a PIN code to view porn movies - they don't just switch to the hot stuff. Someone must have entered the code - otherwise why not switch channels when the blank prompt screen appeared? Maybe the production team were enjoying another kind of broadcast before the news show? Or perhaps its different in relaxed old Sweden.
"Watching the sport" indeed.
